Careers Advisor and High School Resources

School Based Traineeships (SBATs) offer a great opportunity for young people to start a career in Early Childhood Education and Care while completing their HSC and may contribute to an ATAR.

It is important for teachers and career advisors to be aware of the academic nature of the CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care as well as the other challenges of working in a highly regulated industry. This course is not easy to complete and will challenge most SBATs to effectively participate in and submit the required assessment to progress at an appropriate pace.

In addition, Early Childhood settings are fast paced and dynamic places to work and it can be very difficult for SBATs to join in with existing teams while working only one day a week. These challenges often mean support and mentoring from all stakeholders is essential to reduce anxiety and plan effective interactions with colleagues and workplace supervisors.

This page for school teachers and school support staff is intended to provide you with information so you can report on and guide students appropriately and support successful training outcomes.

RTO Support

How Does ICCC support SBATs?
Understanding each Students’ individual circumstances is critical to determining the support strategies that fit best. Often SBATs have multiple commitments in addition to their schooling, which will impact on their ability to participate in training. These could include sporting commitments and home life as well as parent involvement and support for study, all of which will impact a Student’s training experience.

Clear communication between stakeholders allows ICCC Trainers to move quickly in response to an identified need and create a plan of action to support assessment participation, planning and workplace communication.

Reporting

Who Reports to NESA?
The school is responsible for reporting all NESA outcomes. Please contact ICCC if more information on this is required.

Who Completes the Training Plan?
Following the initial sign up and subsequent Training Plan completion, ICCC and the employer will complete the remainder of the Training Plan.

Ongoing Support

There are some ongoing components of the training to address in support for SBATs. These include:

  • Identify who SBAT's key contact is at school - the teacher or support person who will check in with the Student and act as a mentor to encourage and foster communication. This may change from time to time and may need to be updated each term/year.
  • Provide SBATs with an orientation to being an SBAT at your school, including identifying an appropriate study space while at school or where hard copy textbooks may be stored.
  • Identify and communicate an SBAT's timetable with ICCC for each term including any free periods
